Early Childhood

Well-adjusted children are a product of a stable, nurturing family life.  Socio-economic turmoil within families often creates uncertainty, fear and insecurity in the mind of a child— inhibiting healthy psychological development. FSL offers a broad spectrum of services addressing the social, emotional and environmental factors that can have a negative impact on early childhood learning and development. We understand the importance of providing an environment conducive to helping children grow and expand their horizons. At FSL, we’ve created an educational climate which nurtures and supports children in a way that encourages and produces self-confidence, cooperation, self-esteem, and a love of learning.

Parent-Child Home Program

Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) is offered at no cost to the residents of the greater Bellport area.  The PCHP evidence-based model, developed in 1965, is designed to build school readiness at home by teaching parents to work one-on-one and how to engage their role as their child’s first and most important teacher.   PCHP provides two years of intensive, twice-weekly home visits to underserved families with children between the ages of 2 – 4 years.  These families are often challenged by poverty, isolation, limited educational opportunities, language and literacy barriers, as well as other obstacles to healthy development and educational success.  Through these home visits, PCHP early literacy specialists educate parents on the importance of parent-child interaction and give them the tools (books and educational toys), skills, and encouragement to engage their children, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to enter school ready to succeed.
