Program Purpose:
Community Schools are a national model numbering more than 5,000 in the U.S. that has been described as a strategy for organizing the resources of a community around student success and comprehensive youth development.  Family Service League has been funded by JP Morgan Chase Foundation to partner with the Brentwood School District to create the very first community school in Suffolk County – at the Freshman Center which services all ninth grade students in the District.

Program Description:
The Brentwood Community School (BCS) services the students at the Freshman Center and their families by addressing the multitude of barriers to learning that children face, such as emotional, social, family problems or lack of material supports.  The BCS offers a wide array of student enrichment, academic assistance and character education after school to contribute to the development of well-rounded youth who are then more prepared to succeed academically and socially; more prepared to go on to higher education or vocational training upon graduation from high school.   Parents meet regularly with Community School staff and receive opportunities to attend parent meetings and classes, such as computer training held at the “Parent Place” at the Freshman Center.  The BCS has a Family Resource Room, food pantry with trained staff of to assist with concrete needs.
