HomeShare Long Island

< back

Program Purpose:
The program brings together older Homeowners and Home Seekers of all ages to share a single family home. It enables seniors to preserve their homes and independent living status, and - utilizing existing housing stock - enables persons of all ages to obtain desirable, safe, and affordable housing.

Program Description:
HomeShare Long Island is a program that links older Homeowners who have available bedrooms with other adults who need affordable housing. The minimum age of qualified Homeowners is 60 years old. Qualified Home Seekers must be at least 18 years old, and be employed or in school.

HomeShare Long Island is an exchange of services. Homeowners offer accommodations in exchange for an agreed level of help with household tasks, companionship or financial support, or some combination of all three.

HomeShare Long Island offers companionship, safety, and security, and provides Homeowners with needed assistance and/or income while providing Home Seekers with low-cost housing.

HomeShare Long Island enables older individuals to remain independent in their own homes by finding a Home Seeker willing to offer assistance or a modest rental fee.

Persons Served:
HomeShare Long Island is open to homeowners in Suffolk County who are 60 or older with an extra bedroom.

Home Seekers are 18 years or older, employed and/or a student.

Fees:
A one time fee of $200 each is broken down as follows:
Both the homeowner and the home seeker will each pay a $100 fee at the time of the interview. An additional fee of $100 will be paid by each party at the time of the match. Fees cover background and reference checks, interviews, and identifying other matches as needed. Some fees can be reduced or waived if the case warrants it.

Program Hours:
Monday-Friday by Appointment
