How can I join FSL's Volunteer Corps?

All it takes is a phone call and a sincere desire to help those who are truly in need. The work performed by the more than 1,000 members of our Volunteer Corps is essential to fulfilling the Family Service League quest: Restoring Hope ... Rebuilding Lives. We simply could not operate our extensive portfolio of programs without the commitment and assistance of our wonderful volunteers. (hear former Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature Hon. Paul J. Tonna speak at the 2009 Volunteer Luncheon.)

As you can see below, opportunities for you to become involved are diverse. Prior experience is not required. Just choose how you would like to volunteer and you will be trained, supervised, and supported by Family Service League's professional staff.

Ombudservice-- Services and Advocacy for Seniors
Volunteers are trained to become State certified Ombudspersons and serve as advocates for residents of Suffolk's nursing and adult homes, and assisted living facilities.

Debt Counseling
Volunteers are trained to work directly with families and individuals with financial problems resulting from crisis or accumulated debt with the goal to educate the consumer in matters of debt relief and personal finances. Budgeting help is also provided. Some evening hours are available.

Thrift Shop
Volunteers help price, sort, display, and sell donated clothing and household goods.

Camp Scholarship Program
Volunteers help with the administration of the program, fundraising, and outreach.

Stepping Stones Program
Volunteers work directly with psychiatrically disabled adults to improve their everyday life skills.

Family Centers
Volunteers work with children in pre-schools, homework help programs, and as tutors/mentors.

Children and Parents Together (CAPT)
Volunteers work with parents of infants and pre-school children.

Development
Volunteers with office and computer skills are needed to help the Development Department with general office work.

Special Events
Volunteers work on one or more of four exciting Fundraising event committees.

Families and Schools Together
Volunteers work with children and families in a school-based early intervention, family strengthening program. Some evening hours are available.
